Cath Lab Basics, a CE Live meeting, took place April 26, 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia. Check www.naccme.com for more locations and dates. Dr. Morton Kern, Professor of Medicine and Associate Chief, Department of Cardiology, University of California-Irvine, Orange, California and Dr. Michael Forsberg, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri presented the Cath Lab Basics ’08 CE Live Meeting, sponsored by the North American Center for Continuing Medical Education (NACCME), on April 26, 2008 at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.
The program was produced and managed by HMP Communications of Malvern, PA. The program was graciously supported by educational grants from Datascope Corporation, Owens & Minor, Radi Medical Systems, Inc., Terumo Interventional Systems and Volcano Corporation.
The conference was targeted towards nurses, cardiovascular invasive specialists, radiologic technologists, and other allied healthcare workers who are employed as part of the direct cath lab support teams.
The basic learning objectives were:
1. The application of pressure waveforms to diagnosis and artifacts of hemodynamic pressure measurements;
2. A discussion of human (team) dynamics in cath labs;
3. Identification of adverse events and appropriate management techniques for the complications;
4. Indications and contra-indications for diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations;
5. New methods for interventional cardiology procedures;
6. New types of stents;
7. Hemodynamic support devices such as left ventricular assist devices, the Tandem Heart and thrombectomy devices.
The meeting was approved by the California Board of Registered Nurses and the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association for 3.5 contact hours. The American Healthcare Radiology Administrators approved the conference for 4.5 Category A credit hours.
The number of cardiac cath professionals attending was 199. Attendees traveled from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, and Tennessee to experience the dynamic educational presentations given by Drs. Kern and Forsberg. Dr. Forsberg, an enthusiastic and knowledgeable presenter, stepped in for Dr. Kern’s usual partner, Dr. Michael Kim. The lecturers did an excellent job of conveying their knowledge and experience as renowned interventional cardiologists and clinicians to the attending cath lab professionals, a mix of experienced and inexperienced, who all share a strong desire to increase their level of functioning in the cath lab.
