Recent Advancements in Autologous Tissue Grafting

A study by the Wound Healing Society (WHS) reported that approximately 8.2 million people in the U.S. suffered from wounds in 2018.1 The WHS study suggested that treatment of acute and chronic wounds accounted for an estimated $96.8 billion cost of Medicare in 2018, placing an incredible burden on the healthcare system.1 The traditional approach to healing large, full and partial-thickness skin defects often involves excision or debridement and application of split (STSG) or full-thickness skin grafts.2 Recent advancements in grafting technologies have led to the development of novel autologous constructs with the ultimate goal of increasing the efficacy of skin auto-grafts, specifically by increasing the regenerative potential of the skin to improve wound healing. The purpose of this poster is to present a review of the available literature on recently-developed autologous skin products on the market. Published data from 2015 until the present were analyzed and their findings presented in this poster. The search included articles, literature reviews, and meta-analyses. Data extraction and data analysis were performed by two independent researchers (AB, AP). The data was blinded and reviewed by a senior researcher (JM) to validate the analysis. The team evaluated the available data, outlined the pertinent findings, and present our recommendations for additional studies.
