Introduction: Despite decades of advancement in wound healing management, chronic wounds are still a major health issue often requiring surgical management including amputations. Prevalence of chronic wounds are estimated to be 2.21 per 1000 population. Here we document healing of five chronic vascular wounds treated with the Hemastyl R®and Gen-ray® LED combo treatment (Rapid Nexus Inc, Irvine, CA).

Methods: Five patients with 2 to 8 years old large chronic leg wounds including four suggested for amputation were treated with the Hemastyl R® wound dressing followed by Gen-ray® LED (Laser Emitting Diode) twice daily without debridement.

Wound areas were measured from wound photographs using NIH ImageJ software. Wound closure rate per week was calculated from wound area measurements.

Results: Wounds were closed on average 95.5% in 7 to 40 weeks. Wound closure rate ranged from 2.5% to 11.6% per week. Necrosis in and around wounds and severe cyanosis surrounding wounds were cleared in early weeks of the wound management. The wounds were repaired without scar formation or infection with treatment. Peripheric blood circulation in the legs with wounds was restored and patients were able to walk without any issues.

Conclusion: Rapid Nexus Hemastyl-R and Gen-Ray combo treatment reversed the years old non-healing wounds without debridement. Peripheral blood circulation was effectively restored. Overall, the easy to use Rapid Nexus wound management is promising technology to provide effective wound healing solution for non-healing chronic wounds and ensuing amputations.
