The Use of Continuous Topical Oxygen Therapy in Tandem with Cellular, Acellular and Matrix-like Products to Treat Complex, Chronic Wounds: A Retrospective Case Series
Introduction: At SAWC Spring 2024, the authors reported the results of a retrospective case series in which topical oxygen therapy (cTOT) was used to optimize the wound environment prior to application of cellular, acellular, and matrix-like products (CAMPs). This follow-up study looked at the outcomes of patients having a combination of cTOT and CAMPS applied in tandem. Methods:A single center retrospective analysis was conducted to examine the outcomes of patients receiving tandem application of cTOT and CAMPs. Five cases were included in this review. Demographic and wound-specific details were recorded without any patient identifying data. Results:All patients receiving tandem use of cTOT and CAMPs entered into a healing trajectory during the course of therapy. This unique combination of topical treatments supported effective wound management in various hard to heal wound etiologies. All patients tolerated cTOT/CAMPs tandem therapy well without complaints of pain, maceration or other adverse events. To the authors’ knowledge, this case series represents the first reported use of cTOT and CAMPs in tandem.Discussion: The authors believe that tandem combination therapy with cTOT and CAMPs had a synergistic effect on wound healing in this patient population. Looming limitations in the number of CAMP applications permitted under various LCD/LCA policies, as well as restricted access to advanced wound care therapies require healthcare practitioners to find effective synergistic therapies to allow for continued improvements in patient outcomes across the continuum of care.References:
