E-Cigarette Use Associated with Sleep Problems

As is the case with traditional cigarettes, use of electronic cigarettes is associated with sleep problems and compromised overall sleep health, a study involving college students finds.

Published this month in the Journal of Sleep Research, the study used an online survey to assess nicotine use and sleep health among more than 1,600 young adults. The study found that combustible cigarette and e-cigarette users both reported significantly more sleep difficulties than those who had never used the products. E-cigarette users, however, reported greater use of sleep medication than users of traditional cigarettes.

E-cigarettes, much like combustible cigarettes, were associated with worse sleep health, and this was the case for non-daily users as well as more frequent users. The study controlled for variables such as gender and alcohol use.
