Music Resonates With Professionals (cont.)

I do facilitate a group with our residential clients discussing this exact topic. I have each client identify favorite types of music. We then process how music can normalize addictive behavior, how our identities and moods are often tied to the music we listen to, and how music for some might be one of the “things” that might need to change if it can be a trigger or have a negative effect on recovery.

Following this discussion, I have the group members develop a “song about rehab” in teams. The clients then perform for the clinical staff and one another. Not only does it serve as a team building exercise and food for thought, but it also reinforces that it is possible to have fun sober and in treatment.
