Training Manual on Opioid Treatment
The federal Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) has created Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Addiction in Opioid Treatment Programs Inservice Training, a free training manual based on the center’s Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 43. The manual is designed to introduce addiction treatment professionals to medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction, with covered subjects including assessment, treatment planning, pharmacology and dosing information.

The California Institute for Mental Health will host the ninth annual National Information Management Conference and Exposition: Addressing the Needs of Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drug Programs on April 22 and 23 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Anaheim, California. This is the longest-running and largest informatics conference in the United States for the behavioral health care field. The conference each year attracts about 400 attendees, with exhibits from more than 25 software vendors.
Among the more than 40 presenters on the program this year is keynote presenter Jon White, MD, director of health information technology for the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Educational Video on Youth Recovery
The new video “12” offers first-person accounts of young people surviving a period that for them began with experimentation and spiraled into addiction. The 45-minute DVD portrays young people who are sober and have been so since their teen years, illustrating that recovery is possible.

Oral Fluid Testing Option
Denver-based Forensic Laboratories is targeting pain management specialists in introducing a product allowing professionals to conduct oral fluid testing for their monitoring efforts. The trademarked PAINpro promises non-invasive and accurate collection, with the company stating that it is the nation’s first toxicology lab to develop oral fluid testing technology for the pain management market.
“In many cases, doctors who administer pain medications don’t always have the ability to ensure they are collecting a urine sample that hasn’t been tampered with unless direct supervision of the collection has been administered,” says Michael Gates, Forensic Laboratories’ vice president of sales and marketing.
