Ex-offenders empowered through jewelry making project
A dozen New Jersey women who have transitioned to the community from incarceration are receiving a holiday season opportunity to create and market jewelry, with the selling taking place at bustling Newark Liberty International Airport.
The women, clients of the New Jersey Reentry Corporation, are staffing a kiosk near the airport's Terminal B food court area that was opened by Same Sky, an organization that uses jewelry making to empower women and lift them out of poverty. Reentry corporation board chairman Jim McGreevey tells Addiction Professional that such initiatives help women “who have experienced a life of chaos to live a life of sobriety and healthy living.”
McGreevey adds that Same Sky allows these women to engage in a profit-making venture and gives them the opportunity to continue their schooling and possibly pursue more advanced employment. In preparation for the holiday shopping season, the clients received customer service training.
The airport kiosk will be open through the end of this month.
