Putting Some Teeth Into Treatment
When I talk to addiction treatment professionals about the client medical issues they encounter, the subject of dental health almost always is mentioned. So it was hard not to take note of a San Jose Mercury News report this week stating that some female offenders in California are avoiding treatment placement delays by having teeth pulled instead of waiting weeks or months to see a dentist. A state lawmaker is now trying to reduce these wait times through legislation, so that women won't see barriers to accessing addiction care because of pre-existing health problems. What types of general health issues are most prominent in your client population, and how do you work on getting them addressed?
