Still Conflicted About Marijuana
It appears that one definitive statement can be made about the effects of the ever-controversial medical marijuana laws that exist in a dozen states: They sure are keeping regulators and legal authorities busy. The New York Times has reported on a flurry of moves and countermoves in California to encourage the availability of medical marijuana under state statute and then to control what has become a rapid growth in the drug's cultivation. The Times reported that state Attorney General Jerry Brown expects soon to release guidelines regarding the activity of medical marijuana dispensaries, amid concerns that some of these operations have become major profit centers and have compromised public safety. Meanwhile, several states that adopted medical marijuana laws after California did are still struggling with balancing legitimate access to the drug against law enforcement concerns. When it comes to marijuana, conflict reigns.
