Where Are the Anti-Alcohol Forces?
Illicit drugs, obviously an illegal product, get a well-financed eradication apparatus coordinated by a "czar." Tobacco, a legal product that causes great societal harms, gets a $500 million infusion for worldwide cessation efforts from Bill Gates and Michael Bloomberg, we learn this week. I guess this all leaves me wondering, "What does alcohol get?" The question seems especially relevant when a soon-to-be-released report will state that excessive alcohol use costs California more than $38 billion a year in deaths/injuries, health expenses, workplace losses, etc. Who is poised to carry the message about alcohol going forward? Do we just expect primary care physicians to take care of it with screening?
