Guide Released for Families of Youths with Co-Occurring Disorders

Two organizations have developed a guide designed to help families navigate the service system for young people with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders.

The Center on Addiction and the Child Mind Institute have released the free online resource “Substance Use + Mental Health in Teens and Young Adults: Your Guide to Recognizing & Addressing Co-Occurring Disorders.” The guide outlines criteria for substance use disorders in youths, describes guidelines for high-quality diagnosis and treatment, and highlights the benefits of integrated behavioral health and primary care services.

“The goal is to help young people get diagnosed and into treatment, with a support system that will help them succeed in their recovery,” Child Mind Institute president and medical director Harold S. Koplewicz, MD, said in a news release.

According to research, around two-thirds of youths with a substance use disorder also have a mental health disorder.
