Opioid awareness campaign focuses on high school athletes
Pharmacy owners in New Jersey are targeting high school athletes in an information campaign on the dangers of opioid misuse. The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey, which is furnishing some of the materials for the campaign, reports that high school students incur a 33% greater risk of opioid misuse later in life if they are prescribed an opioid before graduation.
Garden State Pharmacy Owners' Stop Opioid Abuse Program (SOAP) will feature student-focused materials for the public, private and parochial school populations, as well as broader community outreach and interaction with state legislators and drug manufacturers. “As pharmacy owners, our members are well aware of the impact opioid abuse is having in our state and around the country,” Garden State Pharmacy Owners executive director Marty Miller said in a news release.
Under the program, individual schools will determine how best to distribute the information to student-athletes, as well as to team coaches and trainers.
