First syringe dropbox in New York City park to be unveiled
This afternoon in the Washington Heights section of New York City, a community group will unveil the first syringe dropbox to be stationed in a New York City park. The Washington Heights CORNER project is introducing the dropbox as part of its larger effort to offer safe and convenient disposal of used syringes from intravenous drug users.
A news release from the organization states, “Placement of this dropbox was selected purposefully to be out of the way and in a location that has the least likelihood of being a nuisance to the general public.” The daisy-shaped receptacle is being placed in Haven Park in Washington Heights.
Other cities have authorized similar installations. The New York City initiative was developed in conjunction with the state Department of Health and was approved by the city parks department.
