Kentucky nonprofit schedules basketball camps for youth

Operation UNITE (Unlawful Narcotics Investigations, Treatment and Education), a nonprofit involved in coordinating a multifaceted response to drug problems in southern and eastern Kentucky, this month is continuing its tradition of holding free regional basketball camps for youths in its Shoot Hoops Not Drugs initiative.

Drug testing company Ameritox is sponsoring the events, with the first scheduled for June 14, for the third consecutive year. The camps for school-age youths are conducted by former University of Kentucky basketball star Jeff Sheppard.

U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers established Operation UNITE in 2003 after a local newspaper series documented numerous problems associated with drug use in his home district. As part of this year's camp sessions, parents will have an opportunity to attend an educational program about opioids.
