Minnesota provider selects system for medication disposal
Meridian Behavioral Health, a multi-facility for-profit provider of addiction treatment services in Minnesota, has selected a patented system for rendering prescription medications unusable and allowing for their safe disposal. Minneapolis-based Verde Technologies established the Deterra Drug Deactivation System, which Meridian will now be using at all of its residential and outpatient facilities.
Meridian, which among its services operates a methadone clinic, disposes an estimated 1,100 doses of unused prescription medication per week. The Deterra System uses a proprietary activated carbon that bonds to pharmaceuticals when water is added, resulting in the drug products being rendered ineffective and thus not prone to later misuse.
Meridian pilot-tested the system at its 50-bed Twin Town facility before deciding to apply its across its family of programs, according to a June 30 news release from Verde Technologies.
