Ohio Alliance Encourages Physicians to Prescribe for Opioid Addiction
An Ohio partnership designed to reduce opioid use in the hard-hit state conducted a training this week to encourage physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants to offer medication-assisted treatment in a variety of care settings.
The Healthy State Alliance, a joint effort of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Mercy Health, conducted the training in Columbus on July 31 at the Addiction Studies Institute conference. The event delivered the message that addressing addiction should be part of everyone's clinical practice.
Training content included an introduction to the American Society of Addiction Medicine's (ASAM's) level-of-care criteria and a review of state efforts to combat the opioid crisis. The alliance is seeking to increase use of medication treatments for opioid dependence in sites such as acute-care hospitals, primary care offices and obstetric/gynecologic practices.
