Research group highlights wastewater testing as part of opioid crisis response

Among the resources that Mathematica Policy Research has been examining to assist communities in combating the opioid crisis is municipal wastewater testing to uncover patterns in local drug use. The research organization states that communities can use wastewater testing to obtain measures of drug use in a timelier and more cost-effective fashion than with traditional surveys.

In another effort to help predict adverse outcomes from opioid misuse, Mathematica is examining how advanced analytic techniques can identify the regional areas that most urgently need interventions. It developed for Massachusetts a predictive tool for opioid overdose deaths.

“This public health and safety problem requires creative strategies that maximize resources to treat and prevent opioid use disorder,” states a summary of initiatives from Mathematica.
