Resources available to implement SBIRT approaches with youths
Two new tools are available to assist professionals in implementing Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) strategies with the adolescent population.
The Learner's Guide to Adolescent SBIRT is designed to explain to nursing and social work students the steps of the SBIRT model. The interactive web-based SBI with Adolescents program offers a conversation simulation to assist practitioners in screening adolescents and in conducting brief interventions designed to combat substance use problems.
“Learning how to identify and treat substance use among adolescents can be inherently challenging because teenagers are often resistant to discussing their substance use with adults,” states a blog post by researchers at NORC at the University of Chicago. NORC, founded as the National Opinion Research Center, partnered with social work and nursing associations as well as other organizations to create an instructor's toolkit that includes the learner's guide.
