SAMHSA honors technology-based overdose prevention efforts
Three technology-based initiatives to combat opioid overdose have received honors in a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) competition in which 13 entries were reviewed.
The first-place award in SAMHSA's Opioid Overdose Prevention Challenge went to RX Assurance's OPI Rescue, a tool serving as a patient support network application for OpiSafe, a service that promotes best practices among prescribers. The first-place award comes with a $10,000 prize.
Second- and third-place honorees were Jared Schwartz's Smart Response, an interactive website on overdose prevention, and iHealthventure's Overdose Prevention iPhone Application, an app that also includes a social connector tool.
A panel of technology specialists, subject matter experts and federal officials evaluated the entries on the criteria of product design, product performance, feasibility of use and potential impact. SAMHSA launched the challenge in June.
