Some nightclub and festival goers are unwittingly exposed to bath salts
Research financed by the Center for Drug Use and HIV Research has found that a significant number of users of the drug Ecstasy at nightclubs or dance festivals are also being unknowingly exposed to the synthetic stimulants known as bath salts.
The study, conducted in the period between July and September of last year, used surveys and hair samples collected at the sites to conclude that just under half of users of Ecstasy/Molly tested positive for bath salts that often are found to be adulterants in Ecstasy. Commonly seen substances in this category are butylone and methylone.
“Little is known about these new drugs and some may be more dangerous than MDMA,” the active chemical ingredient in Ecstasy/Molly, said Joseph J. Palamar, PhD, MPH, assistant professor of population health at New York University's Langone Medical Center.
Forty-eight young adults provided hair samples for the analysis. Results were published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
