Re-emergence of crystal meth renews concerns over dangers
Drug seizure data from South Florida indicate that the problem of crystal methamphetamine use is intensifying, fueled this time by production in large organized lab operations south of the U.S. border.
The trend has renewed concern over a resurgence of crystal meth use in the gay male community, as part of a “party and play” culture in which meth use becomes closely linked with unprotected sex. One difference with today's crystal meth use is the much higher purity of the drug now than it was years ago, when methamphetamine was manufactured mainly in small labs across the U.S.
The Miami Herald reported last week that local police seizures of methamphetamine in 2017 in Miami-Dade County had reached levels that were more than triple the number from five years ago.
