Survey: Some teens using e-cigarette devices for inhaling marijuana

A study based on a survey of Connecticut teenagers has found that some have discovered e-cigarette vaporizers to be convenient vehicles for inhaling marijuana.

USA Today reported Sept. 7 that among surveyed students who reported use of both e-cigarettes and marijuana, around one-quarter had used e-cigarette devices to vaporize marijuana. The study was published this week in Pediatrics.

Study co-author Meghan Rabbitt Morean, an assistant professor at Oberlin College, was quoted in the newspaper article as saying that “teenagers are resourceful, and it was only a matter of time.” She added, “Everybody knows that characteristic smell of marijuana, but this vapor is different. It's possible that teenagers are using pot in a much less detectable way.”

Morean does urge that these results be interpreted carefully, because no other studies to this point have revealed this potential use for e-cigarette devices.
