Texas lawmakers pass loan repayment bill for counselors
A bill that would offer loan repayment assistance to licensed addiction counselors in Texas has gone to Gov. Greg Abbott for his signature. House Bill 3083, unanimously passed by the state Senate last week, is seen as an important incentive for licensed chemical dependency counselors to work in provider shortage areas, according to a statement from the Texas Hospital Association.
“When Texans can finally access the drug and alcohol treatment they need, health outcomes will improve and public perception and stigma of addiction will continue to change,” said Ted Shaw, the hospital association's president and CEO.
Eighty percent of the state's geography is considered a behavioral health professional shortage area, according to the association.
