Toolkit assists treatment programs in smoking cessation
A toolkit from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is designed in part to help addiction treatment centers establish tobacco cessation programs and become smoke-free workplaces.
“Implementing Tobacco Cessation Programs in Substance Use Disorder Treatment Settings: A Quick Guide for Program Directors and Clinicians” is one of three parts of the new tobacco cessation toolkit. This section outlines the harms of tobacco use and the benefits of tobacco cessation.
The other parts of the toolkit target providers in helping patients to quit tobacco use, and patients in understanding the importance of tobacco cessation in reinforcing a healthy recovery from a substance use disorder.
SAMHSA reports that although the percentage of tobacco-related deaths is disproportionately high in the population with a substance use disorder, just over half of addiction treatment facilities did not offer tobacco cessation services in 2016.
