Treating Co-Occurring Disorders: The Evidence-Based and Family-Centric Approach
Evidence-based, consensus-based, and common knowledge practices have all been proven successful treatment methods for patients experiencing co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders. However, in many cases, relapse and multiple stints within inpatient treatment programs can be common among these patients. What treatments do these patients need to sustain their recovery?
Clinicians at WestBridge, a private non-profit organization specializing in treatment of co-occurring disorders, have found that a family-centered approach, combined with evidence-based therapies to individually treat both mental illness and substance use, have resulted in better outcomes for patients with co-occurring disorders.
Studies show that patients in recovery have a much higher success rate when their loved ones participate in recovery with them, and Behavioral Family Therapy allows patients to do just that. By bringing families together and giving them a chance to heal as a group, patients have been able to reconnect with their families, finding that this has helped them the most.
Join Mary Woods, CEO of WestBridge, and Norm Asselin, Customer Relations Team Leader of WestBridge, as they discuss methods for treatment of co-occurring disorders, the importance of family in the recovery process, and what makes WestBridge’s treatment programs successful with these vulnerable patients.
