'Father of CBT' Aaron T. Beck, MD, Celebrates 100th Birthday

Aaron T. Beck, MD, widely regarded as the “father of cognitive behavior therapy,” celebrated his 100th birthday this week on July 18.

In a career spanning more than 7 decades, Beck has published more than 600 articles and either authored or co-authored 25 books. He has earned more than 50 awards, including the Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research and the Gustave O. Lienhard Award from the Institute of Medicine in 2006. The journal The American Psychologist credits him as “one of the five most influential psychotherapists of all time.”

A graduate of Brown University in 1942 and Yale Medical School in 1946, Beck developed the CBT intervention after exploring the psychoanalytic concepts of depression during his time as a psychiatrist at the University of Pennsylvania.
