Associations Between IBD and AD Appear to Be Bidirectional
Findings from a recent meta-analysis showed a potential bidirectional relationship between atopic dermatitis (AD) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
“Recently, AD has been suggested as a systemic inflammatory disorder that can accompany other inflammatory diseases, including IBD,” the researchers said. They conducted a systematic review to determine the association between IBD and AD by searching for relevant studies from MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library. Studies reporting IBD and patients with AD and ones that reported on AD in patients with IBD were evaluated separately.

A total of 10 studies, with 95,291,110 patients, were included in the analysis. Four studies were on the prevalence of AD in IBD, two studies were on the prevalence and incidence of IBD in AD, and four studies were on either the prevalence and or incidence of IBD in AD.
The researchers found a statically significant association between IBD and AD in both directions. In their meta-analysis, the odds ratio (OR) of four studies on the prevalence of AD in IBD was 1.39 (95% CI; 1.28-1.50), OR of five studies on IBD prevalence in AD was 1.35 (95% CI; 1.05-1.73), and the relative risk of 3 studies on IBD incidence in AD was 1.46 (95% CI; 0.98-2.17).
“Published literature suggests a bidirectional relationship between IBD and AD,” the researchers concluded. One limitation of the study was the small number of observational studies that were reviewed, they noted.
