CHRISTUS Spohn, Oceans Announce Plans for BH Unit in Texas

CHRISTUS Spohn Health System and Oceans Healthcare have announced plans to build a behavioral health unit and add BH services on the campus of CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi – Shoreline.

The project is the latest step in an ongoing expansion this year for Oceans, which has opened three other hospitals and announced plans for an additional two locations. The new Corpus Christi facility will be a 40-bed unit that is owned and operated by Oceans and function as a “hospital within a hospital” that expands the campus’ inpatient bed capacity by more than 20%. The program will offer behavioral health treatment for adults over the age of 18. It is expected to open in Spring 2022 and will replace the behavioral health unit on the CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi – Memorial campus.

In a release announcing the new behavioral health unit being constructed, CHRISTUS Spohn and Oceans noted that Texas has the second-highest rate of adults with mental health challenges in the U.S., but is 50th out of 51 states and Washington, D.C., in overall access to mental healthcare services, according to a report published last August by Mental Health America. That same month, CHRISTUS Spohn and Oceans entered into a management agreement to expand treatment options within the Coastal Bend region of Texas. Thus far, the partnership has resulted in a 27% year-over-year increase in patients treated by CHRISTUS Spohn.
