Netsmart names Chuang SVP for healthcare informatics and chief medical officer

Netsmart, a provider of health information technology to behavioral health and human services organizations, yesterday announced the appointment of Ian Chuang, M.D., M.S., F.C.F.P. as senior vice president, healthcare informatics and chief medical officer, a move that CEO Michael Valentine said would “help clients optimize the effectiveness and broaden the scope of care they provide in the coordinated care environment.”

“I look forward to working with Dr. Chuang as he brings a strong physical health perspective and knowledge in clinical decision support and predictive analytics. This will contribute greatly to our key initiatives in these critical areas,” said Dennis Morrison, Ph.D, Netsmart’s chief clinical officer. Drs. Chang and Morrison will collaborate in charting a course for Netsmart custopmers toward more coordinated and integrated care. 

Chuang joins Netsmart from Lockton Benefit Group in Kansas City, Mo., where he served as senior vice president, health risk management. He previously led the development of care management and clinical decision support systems at CIGNA Corporation and was a director and vice president at Cerner Corporation, where he led initiatives ranging from a systems-based care transformation service with focus on evidence-based practice to a next-generation CDS system with context-sensitive clinical information presentation and viewing.

Dr. Chuang received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Toronto and a Master of Science degree in Administrative Medicine from the University of Wisconsin.He currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Informatics, School of Medicine, at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He also continues as a member of the National Quality Forum Health Information Technology Advisory Committee (HITAC).
