AAC Names Co-CEOs in Latest Leadership Change

Tom Valentino, Digital Managing Editor

American Addiction Centers enters a new year with a pair of new faces atop its organization. The multistate operator of inpatient and outpatient substance use disorder treatment services announced in December that David Hans, PsyD, and Ellen-Jo Boschert have been appointed co-chief executive officers.

Dr Hans and Boschert succeed Thomas Britton, PhD, who has served as CEO of the Brentwood, Tennessee-based organization since February 2022. The latest leadership change is AAC’s third within a 4-year period. In January 2020, Andrew McWilliams was elevated from chief financial officer to CEO, succeeding Michael Cartwright, who remained with the organization’s board of directors. Dr Britton then followed McWilliams, arriving at AAC having previously served as president and CEO of the Gateway Foundation.

In a news release announcing their appointments, AAC highlighted Dr Hans’ and Boschert’s experience working across the treatment continuum and leading multistate healthcare organizations.

“Ellen-Jo and Dr Hans possess the knowledge, passion, and expertise to continue building upon our commitment to clinical excellence and our mission to provide life-changing care,” AAC board chair Bowen Diehl said in the release.

Dr Hans has more than 20 years of behavioral healthcare leadership experience, previously serving as CEO of Acadia Healthcare’s Life Healing Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for nearly 2 years. After a 21-month stint as CEO of Haven Behavioral Hospital of Albuquerque that began in October 2020, Dr Hans joined AAC as chief clinical and compliance officer in June 2022.

“We look forward to continuing to work closely with our facilities and employees across the organization to strengthen AAC’s position as a leading addiction treatment provider, especially at a time when more people are in need of high-quality behavioral healthcare,” Dr Hans said.

Boschert, who has spent more than 30 years in key leadership roles for multistate, multisite healthcare organizations, has held the title of chief operating officer at AAC since joining the company in October 2022. Boschert also previously served as VGH chief experience officer and TLC chief operations officer during her time with Vision Group/TLC Laser Eye Centers from 2018 to 2022.

“As established colleagues and now CEOs, Dr Hans and I are collaborating to seamlessly transition the organization to the new leadership model and position AAC for an even more impactful 2024 and beyond,” Boschert said.
