American Addiction Centers Announces New CEO

Tom Valentino, Digital Managing Editor

American Addiction Centers on Tuesday announced that longtime healthcare executive Thomas Britton, PhD, has been appointed as its new CEO, effective Feb. 7. Britton succeeds the exiting CEO Andrew McWilliams, who will stay on during a transitional period.

Dr Britton has more than 30 years of behavioral healthcare experience, serving in both clinical and leadership positions. Most recently, he served as president and CEO of the not-for-profit addiction treatment provider the Gateway Foundation.

“There has never been a time when innovation and quality were more important in the field of addiction medicine than now,” Dr Britton said in a news release. “American Addiction Centers is uniquely positioned to integrate science, medicine and compassionate, outcome-oriented care. I look forward to not only serving our patients but working alongside our employees to save lives and promote lifelong recovery.”

Dr Britton will be charged with building on the momentum generated for AAC under McWilliams’ leadership over the past 2 years. McWilliams, who has been with AAC since 2014, was elevated from the role of chief financial officer in January 2020, and over the ensuing 24 months, AAC has increased its number of patients treated, improved its adjusted earnings by $35 million, and restructured its balance sheet.

AAC Board Chairman Bowen Diehl credited McWilliams’ “tremendous leadership” in building “a strong financial foundation” during his tenure as CEO.

American Addiction Centers is a national operator of inpatient and outpatient substance use disorder treatment, offering services for SUD, alcohol addiction, and co-occurring mental and behavioral health conditions.
