Caron Treatment Centers Opens Research Facility
Caron Treatment Centers announced the opening of the Fran and Doug Tieman Center for Research on its campus in Wernersville, Pennsylvania. The center opened on Tuesday.
Named for the not-for-profit addiction and behavioral healthcare organization’s former president and CEO, the Tieman Center for Research will allow for expanded studies, as well as the recruitment of individuals from outside Caron who are interested in participating in research.
Caron announced its initial plans for the Tieman Center for Research in July 2021, shortly after its namesake retired as its top executive after a 26-year run. In November 2021, Doug Tieman noted to Behavioral Healthcare Executive that the center would give Caron’s ongoing research on the science of addiction a dedicated home. Over the past 5 years, Caron has been involved with about a dozen research projects involving the National Institutes of Health.
The Tieman Center for Research will focus on components of substance use disorder prevention, treatment, and recovery, including identifying genetic markets associated with an increased risk for addiction, relapse prediction, and repurposing medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat other diseases. The center will also focus on expanding academic partnerships to facilitate research, train healthcare professionals, and establish a pipeline program designed to engage high school and college students interested in pursuing careers in research and healthcare.
“Research done well requires proper funding, precision, patience, and diligence,” Caron Chief Medical Officer Joseph Garbely, DO, DFASAM, FAPA, who will oversee the center, said in a news release. “By making this investment, we can substantially improve our understanding of relapse, increase treatment options, and identify tools and markers to make addiction a significantly more preventable and treatable disease.”
