CVS Health Expands Project Health Initiative to Include Mental Health Screenings

Tom Valentino, Digital Managing Editor

CVS Health recently announced it is adding mental health screenings to Project Health, its community-based program that offers a variety of free health assessments, primarily for low-income individuals and underserved populations.

Since 2006, Project Health has provided screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose level, and body mass index to detect early risks of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Screenings will now include PHQ-2 assessments to identify individuals who may require additional evaluation for depression. Following screenings, participants will have the option of meeting with a nurse practitioner who can offer treatment referrals and follow-up care recommendations.

Project Health is adding nearly 100 organizations in 2023 to host its mobile units. Overall, CVS Health plans to host nearly 2000 screening events this year at CVS Pharmacy locations and community organizations. As part of its expansion, Project Health is also entering 2 new markets: Greensboro, North Carolina, and Petersburg, Virginia.

“Our events now serve more communities than ever, tapping into our CVS Pharmacy footprint and a vast network of local organizations to host our mobile units and help ensure transportation is not a barrier to receiving health services,” Sheryl Burke, CVS Health senior vice president of corporate social responsibility and chief sustainability officer, said in a news release. “We’re also broadening our services to include mental health screenings as we continue to see a need for accessible mental health care across the country.”
