New Approaches in Rosacea and Acne

On the first day of the inaugural APP Institute Dermatology 2024, Hillary Baldwin, MD, dermatologist and director of the Acne Treatment and Research Center in Brooklyn, NY, and Heather Roebuck, DNP, FNP-BC, FAANP, director of research at RoebuckDERM, discussed the evolving approach to managing rosacea and acne.

For rosacea, Dr Baldwin emphasized the shift from traditional subtypes to a phenotypic approach, noting that most patients require a combination of treatments tailored to their specific symptoms. She highlighted key treatments for rosacea, including ivermectin 1% cream, minocycline 1.5% foam, and microencapsulated benzoyl peroxide 5%, praising their rapid efficacy. She also discussed the anti-inflammatory benefits of tetracyclines and the importance of avoiding full-dose antibiotics to reduce resistance.

Addressing acne, Dr Baldwin reassured attendees that concerns about benzoyl peroxide contamination are minimal and introduced new treatments like clascoterone 1% cream. She also showcased advancements in laser technology for acne, which offer significant results with minimal adverse effects.

Next, Heather Roebuck shared valuable insights on managing persistent acne and rosacea, emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach and patient-centered care. Using case studies, Roebuck highlighted the complexities of treating patients with underlying conditions, such as endocrine disorders, and the importance of careful medication management to avoid interactions like hyperkalemia. She also discussed the challenges faced by active patients with rosacea, stressing the need for proper sun protection and skin care.

Roebuck emphasized the importance of listening to patient concerns and tailoring treatment plans to their lifestyles. She also noted recent updates to the iPLEDGE program aimed at improving accessibility and inclusivity. Finally, she encouraged practitioners to utilize evidence-based tools and stay informed about the latest guidelines and research in acne and rosacea treatment.
