Circulating S100A8 Levels are Associated With Psoriasis Pathogenesis
Serum S100A8 levels in patients with psoriasis could determine psoriasis pathogenesis, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
Researchers aimed to evaluate the S100A8 gene polymorphism and S100A8 serum level in patients with psoriasis vulgaris to determine its role in psoriasis pathogenesis. A total of 50 patients with psoriasis and 26 controls were included in the case-control study. Psoriasis severity was evaluated using the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score. S100A8 serum levels were determined by ELISA, and gene polymorphisms were evaluated with polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism.
Higher levels of serum S100A8 levels were found in patients with psoriasis compared with controls and positively correlated with the PASI score. The AA genotype and A allele were increased among patients with psoriasis; the AA genotype was associated with psoriasis severity and high S100A8 levels.
“Circulating S100A8 could associated with disease severity and have an active role in psoriasis pathogenesis,” concluded the study authors.
