Don’t Let Weather Be a Factor in Saving Lives

August 2012

EMS providers have enough to concern themselves with when they’re treating patients—weather shouldn’t be a factor that gets in the way of quality patient care. With the Eclipse SX 3-in-1 system jacket from Gerber Outwear it no longer has to be.

The Eclipse SX is waterproof, breathable and bloodborne pathogen impervious. It’s also ANSI 107 Class 3 compliant for high visibility and improved safety on roadways.

Spring Fire Department, located about 20 miles north of Houston, has only used the Eclipse SX for a matter of weeks, but Deputy Chief Scott Schoonover says they’ve already seen the advantages firsthand.

“We had a large thunderstorm come through in early June,” Schoonover says. “We had personnel on the roadways during the storm, dealing with things like power lines. The jacket helped keep their upper body dry and they were visible. It worked great.”

The lime-yellow outer shell has LumenX reflective accents on the shoulders and Scotchlite striping on the body and sleeves. Other features include waterproof zipper chest pockets, two-way patch pockets and a concealable hood. The Eclipse SX also includes a removable soft shell liner jacket.

Schoonover said a major motivation for Spring Fire Department to purchase the Eclipse SX was because it operates with approximately 200 combination volunteer and paid crews. “We didn’t want to have 20 different raincoats on scene from different fire departments. We wanted something our membership could wear that had Spring Fire Department on the back of it and was reflective so when they’re on the roadway we don’t have to utilize traffic vests with the coats.”

Another reason Spring Fire Department chose the Eclipse SX from Gerber Outerwear, Schoonover says, was the significant overall savings compared to jackets from other vendors, in addition to the full five-year warranty for the entire coat.
