Streamlining Care with All-in-One Automatic Emergency Ventilator

November 2013

The use of mask CPAP/BiPAP has become a standard of care during prehospital treatment by EMS personnel. But some agencies are still using separate ventilators and CPAP machines.

It was this inefficiency that led Cooke County EMS in Gainesville, TX, to the AEV® (Automatic Emergency Ventilator) from Impact Instrumentation, Inc. The AEV® is a versatile, easy-to-use portable critical care ventilator with volume and pressure-targeted modes, which also includes pressure support, NPPV Mask CPAP with BiPAP modes and automatic leak compensation. Impact’s new AEV® is designed for patients ≥5 kg.

Cooke County EMS Director Kevin Grant says his agency was eager to make the switch from its 20-year-old ventilators and separate CPAP machines because the AEV® is able to fulfill all of Cooke County’s ventilation needs. “We were able to upgrade our ventilators and use them for positive pressure ventilation.”

Grant says the AEV® has proven very effective in the field. “It is easy to use, quick to set up, very easy to train on and quick for the student to pick up on. We have used it in the field on intubated patients, CPAP, BiPAP and on transfers for all the same situations. We are a rural department, so it is much more effective to have a ventilator for our long transports.”

Grant also likes that the AEV® was made for the transportation industry so it’s rugged and reliable for regular field use, and it has long battery life. Weighing in at about 9.5 lbs., the AEV® can run continuously on a full charge for at least 10 hours.

“It does everything we want it to do, has ease of use and the price is great,” says Grant.
