More Than Just Emergencies

February 2014

As more EMS agencies across the country start to consider incorporating mobile integrated healthcare initiatives into their practice, one item they might want to include is a mobile clinic.

About a year ago Christus Foundation for HealthCare in Houston, TX, rolled out a new mobile unit built by Frazer, and they couldn’t be happier with the results. “We were looking into adding another mobile unit,” says Laura Clay, director of the Healthy Living Mobile Clinic, “and one of our board members knew about Frazer. They mainly make ambulances and we thought it was more economical for us to go with a smaller unit.”

Christus Foundation already had a large, 40-foot mobile unit, but the new unit from Frazer fit its needs perfectly. The Healthy Living Mobile Clinic may be smaller but it incredibly includes two phlebotomy chairs, used for preventative screenings for things like checking blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol; a refrigerator, use to store immunizations; a hand-washing sink; computers and a printer/copier; file cabinets; an extra bench for patient intake; a water heater; and ample cabinet space.

Clay says Christus Foundation uses the Frazer mobile unit at least three times a week—and sometimes as many as five times, if the larger unit is out of service. “We use this at schools, community centers, churches, health fairs, senior apartment housing, and apartment sites—pretty much everywhere in the community.”

And, Clay says, she’s seen a new screening unit built by Frazer that incorporates some things—examination rooms and an exterior canopy—which she wishes she had in her unit. “That may be something we look at in the future,” she adds.
