Splinting Made Easy
Swiss Army knives are great because they have just about everything you need in one compact, easy to use package. The SEFRS (Sager Emergency Fracture Response System) from Minto is just as handy.
Nancy Kellough of Paxton Life Squad in Bainbridge, OH, has been using the SEFRS for about two years and has seen its effectiveness firsthand many times.
“I like the fact that it’s compact,” she says. “Everything comes in one kit so if you send somebody after a splint, everything’s right there. We fly a lot of people out—I’d used a hare traction early in my career, I’ve even used a Thomas half-ring, and the helicopters now are so compact you cannot get one of those in a helicopter—there’s just not enough room.”
SEFRS combines a compact bilateral traction splint (for treatment of proximal third and midshaft fractures) with an adaptor—for treatment of all other extremity fractures, dislocations and joint injuries without traction. SEFRS customizes the splint to the patient, fractures can be splinted in position found the device features rapid assembly and rapid application.
Kellough says she likes the fact that a provider can splint many different types of fractures with the same kit. “I had a lady who had osteogenesis imperfecta, which is a bone disease, and she walked across the yard and fractured her femur. We put it on her—I had to coerce and cajole her into letting me do that because she was in a great deal of pain. We told her it would relieve some of her pain and she commented on the way to the hospital about how much it helped.”
For Kellough, the biggest selling point of the SEFRS is you have everything you need right in one simple package. “You don’t have to make 15 trips back to the truck to find what you need. They’ve done a really fantastic job putting together.”
