Pediatric calls are some of the most difficult for EMS providers for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is because providers so rarely come into contact with kids as patients compared to their adult counterparts.

That can cause no small amount of consternation about proper drug dosages. Thankfully, the Handtevy Pediatric Box from Pediatric Emergency Standards has for the first time unraveled the mystery of the critical pediatric call using a first of its kind age-based method combined with a customized length-based resuscitation system.

This unique “hybrid” approach addresses the psychological hurdles that prehospital providers encounter during low volume-high stress pediatric calls. While the barriers to providing high quality pediatric care have always been attributed to the age of the patient, the product’s creator uncovered that the greatest stress was with the prehospital provider. Diminished confidence, mathematical calculations and medication administration difficulty impairs rapid on-scene treatment in favor of a "load-and-go" approach. However, these time-sensitive decisions prove to be critical during the first few moments of a pediatric arrest and are likely the reason that mortality from pediatric arrest has remained at 94% for two decades.

Colorado Children’s Hospital conducted 272 pediatric simulations in a randomized cross-over trial evaluating the Handtevy Pediatric Box and found significant medication administration advantages over the current standard. Furthermore, in a post-simulation survey, the majority of participants perceived the Handtevy system as faster (91.1%), more accurate (88.2%) and preferable (91.1%). This research abstract will be presented at the 2014 NAEMSP Conference in January in Tucson, AZ.
