Training to Save the Smallest Patients

September 2014

EMS providers don’t encounter a lot of infant patients, and they see even fewer infant patients with severe conditions. That’s not a bad thing, but it does mean a provider’s skill and comfort level with infants isn’t as high as it is with adults, who are seen with much greater frequency.

Nasco’s Life/form Infant Airway Management Trainer features realistic size and anatomy and is perfect for practicing airway management skills on an infant. Daniel Pierstorff, critical care paramedic/quality assurance coordinator for Ryan Brothers EMS in Madison, WI, says he was drawn to the Infant Airway Management Trainer for its versatility, ease of use and low maintenance costs. “It has realistic anatomy and can facilitate multiple airway devices to include the endotracheal tube. This product is able to be placed on several Life/form infant manikin bodies for further versatility, which enhances the realism of the training.”

Pierstorff says due to the low frequency of infant patients—and even lower frequency of severe infant respiratory emergencies—Ryan Brothers EMS uses the trainer to enhance and sustain the pediatric respiratory management skills of its crews. “It is extremely practical, as we utilize this tool to facilitate endotracheal tube intubations for our paramedics on a regular basis,” he explains. “This leads to an increased comfort level and builds confidence in our paramedics when they are faced with an infant respiratory emergency.”

He adds he would recommend Life/form Infant Airway Management Trainer to all services, regardless of license level.
