Maine Toddler Revived After Falling Down Well

July 10--WINN, Maine -- It was no ordinary rescue for the young Mattawamkeag Ambulance Service.

As the crew headed out Saturday, they expected a grim scene from what the dispatcher had relayed to them -- a drowned toddler, unresponsive.

Their trepidation turned to elation when they were able to revive the 2-year-old girl who had fallen down a well.

The crew was called mid-afternoon to a home on Route 168 in Winn, according to Mattawamkeag Fire Chief Bobby Powers.

"They were able to revive her quickly once they got there," the chief said early Saturday evening.

No other information, including the girl's identity, could be released due to health care privacy laws, he said.

"The family is joyful," he said.

The child apparently fell into a shallow well on the property, according to Powers. Her father was able to retrieve her before the ambulance crew arrived.

She was taken to Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln.

Powers praised the work of dispatchers at the Penobscot Regional Communication Center in assisting the girl's family before their arrival.

It was the first drowning call for the 18-month-old ambulance service, the chief said.
