New Rules Proposed for Helicopter Safety

The FAA proposed stricter flight rules for helicopters Thursday, including many to increase safety for medical helicopters after a recent spike in fatal accidents. Among the proposed regulations is a requirement that all air ambulance helicopters be equipped with an electronic system that warns of terrain or other obstacles.

Pa. Paramedics Plan Suit to Stay With Firefighters Union

The city's paramedics are planning to sue over Mayor Nutter's efforts to keep them out of the firefighters union. The dispute goes back to a ruling by the Pa. Labor Relations Board that gave the city the right to shift paramedics out of the firefighters union, which meant the medics would have to switch to the health plan that nonrepresented city employees get, which union representatives say is not as generous.

When Johnny Met Rosie--Women in EMS Part 2: Romancing the Badge

It is statistically far more likely you will have some level of romantic relationship with a partner or co-worker at some point in the course of your career than of being hit by a meteor, or just about anything else. One could almost say it's inevitable. Know what the acronym used in studies for "extramarital sex" is? You guessed it: EMS.

Operations Under Fire: Why You Need a Continuity of Operations Plan

For the uninitiated, a continuity of operations plan, commonly referred to as a COOP, can be intimidating to understand, develop and operationalize. The process may seem daunting, but having a solid understanding of what it entails and who needs to be at the proverbial table can make the process easier.

Continuing Education

EMS Management of Catastrophic Cheerleading Injuries

Thirty years ago, cheerleading was limited to energetic toe touch jumps, splits, claps and pom-pom shaking. Today, cheerleading routines include more technical tumbling, partner stunts, multilevel pyramids, lifts, catches and tosses. Likewise, the number and severity of injuries seen at all levels of cheerleading has increased. With over 3.6 million cheerleaders in the United States, it is reasonable to believe that many EMS providers will have the opportunity to respond to an emergency at a cheerleading event at some point during their careers.

This CE activity is approved by EMS Magazine, an organization accredited by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS), for 1.5 CEUs. After reading the article, take the CE test that accompanies this lesson at www.rapidce.com.
