EMS Revisited

Your Other Half

A new column was launched in the Sept/Oct 1978 issue of EMS Magazine titled EMT Round Table, which gave readers the opportunity to expound informally on just about any subject (EMS related, of course) dear to their heart. James Chick, an EMT supervisor for Foothill Ambulance Service, Inc., in Citrus Heights, CA, started off the series with his reflections on partners in EMS. According to Chick, when it comes to your partner in EMS, before you knock someone else's habits, take a good look at your own.

It's Not There Just to Look Pretty

No matter what publisher you use, the textbooks are designed with features that your students really don't know unless you show them. In this month's Open Airways podcast, program director Allen Dalrymple goes over some of the basic features that will help students get the most from their EMT textbooks.

New Vehicle Training

Too often, placing a new ambulance into service is taken for granted. Each new model produced has its own hazards and safety features, new electronics, lighting, warning systems, maintenance, and often new equipment placement. These are not insignificant changes. Whether a new EMT or a seasoned veteran, no one should ever get into a new vehicle and have to ask, "What is that switch for?" or "What does that light mean?"

Continuing Education

High School Sports Injuries

Every year more than 2 million injuries occur to high school athletes, resulting in 500,000 physician visits and 30,000 hospital admissions. Many of these injuries are very minor and are treated by school athletic trainers with little to no involvement of EMS. More serious injuries can arise, however. This article looks at two serious sports-related injuries that are seen, yet can be difficult to evaluate, in high school sports: carotid artery dissection and traumatic brain injury.

This CE activity is approved by EMS Magazine, an organization accredited by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS), for 1.5 CEUs. After reading the article, take the CE test that accompanies this lesson at www.rapidce.com.
