NASHVILLE, Tenn. --

A man nearly lost his life after jumping off the Shelby Street pedestrian bridge in Nashville at about 11 p.m. Friday.

Police said the man fell 90 feet from the bridge to the Cumberland River.

Firefighters said the impact would have felt like hitting a concrete wall.

The man survived the fall and rescue crews said the man managed to keep his head above water until firefighters pulled him to safety. Crews said he would have died from exhaustion if he had been in the water a few minutes longer.

The jumper was taken to an area hospital for evaluation. It has not been released why the man jumped.
