Two Hurt in N.J. Bus-Rig Collision
Multiple injuries were reported Wednesday after a bus and tractor-trailer collided on the New Jersey Turnpike, state police said.
The collision occurred shortly before noon in the southbound lanes of the turnpike in South Brunswick Township, according to police. The bus was carrying 55 passengers from New York to Washington.
Two people with serious injuries and 14 others with minor injuries were transported to hospitals, state police Sgt. Stephen Jones said. Earlier, police had said 35 people had minor injuries. Jones said some of them likely refused treatment.
Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital was treating seven of the injured, with two in serious condition and five in fair condition, said hospital spokesman Peter Haigney.
State police investigating the accident said the truck jackknifed at some point.
"My understanding is that the only significant injuries were to people on the bus," Turnpike Authority spokesman Tom Feeney said. "I can't tell you for sure that the truck driver was not injured, but if he was his injuries are not serious."
He said the bus is registered to D&C Trailways, a Maryland company.
Bus riders who were not injured or who refused treatment for minor injuries were picked up by a second bus, he said.
Traffic remained backed up on the turnpike for several hours after the accident, he said.
