Two FDNY Paramedics Seriously Injured When Ambulance Struck in Hit-And-Run

January 13, 2005 -- Two FDNY paramedics, responding to a call of an elderly heart-attack victim in Queens, were seriously injured early yesterday when a hit-and-run driver rammed their ambulance.

The crash sent the emergency vehicle careening into an elevated-subway stanchion in Rockaway beach.

Police captured the fleeing motorist - who was wanted in a Nassau County larceny case - after a short chase.

The drama began at about 8 a.m. when paramedics Vito Leone, 29, and Victor Potito, 28, were heading west with their lights and sirens wailing along Rockaway Freeway to aid a 79-year-old man suffering from cardiac arrest.

As they crossed Beach 94th St., their ambulance was sideswiped by a 2004 Chevy Malibu driven by Juan Valet, 22, police said. They were taken to Jamaica Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.
