New York EMT Busted Stealing Painkillers From Undercover Officers
Janet Berg, 43, allegedly stole Valium from officers who were posing as patients in need of medical attention, said the Department of Investigation.
The sting was conducted in response to a number of patients complaining they had lost prescription pills while in Berg's care.
The officers parked at 172 Street and Washington Avenue and flagged down Berg's ambulance. One of them pretended to have back pain and was placed inside.
While the officers were at the ambulance, Berg twice went to their car - outfitted with cameras and microphones - where one bottle filled with codeine and another with Valium were in the center console, the DOI said.
During one of the trips, Berg allegedly snatched more than 20 Valium pills.
She allegedly put them inside a glove and then stuffed the glove into a trash can at St. Barnabas Hospital, where the "patients" were taken. The pills were later recovered.
It was unclear what Berg allegedly planned to do with the pills.
Charges against her were pending last night.
