New York Subway Severs Man`s Arm

A New Jersey dad's left arm was severed yesterday after he fell to the tracks in front of a subway train at a lower Manhattan station, cops said.

Joseph Pierre told his son he was pushed, but police said the Irvington man was not the victim of a crime.

Pierre, 63, was standing on the platform at the Fulton Street station when he fell onto the tracks and was hit by a northbound No. 5 train at 9:09 a.m., police said.

His left arm was severed just above the elbow and he suffered lacerations to his left leg.

Pierre was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition.

His wife, Rose, and his son, Hans, 25, rushed to his bedside.

"My dad thinks someone pushed him. That's what he remembers," Hans said, adding that doctors expect him to make a full recovery.

The incident snarled subway service for 45 minutes. No. 5 trains were diverted to the No. 2 line and service on the No. 4 line was suspended from Nevins Street in Brooklyn to the Brooklyn Bridge. Normal service was restored at 9:55 a.m.

Four jurors in the Martha Stewart trial were caught in the delay, and the second day of deliberations began an hour late.
